Global Health

Most of the global health wok that I have under taken were projects to optimize and standardize reporting systems.  

Philippines

Several projects have occurred (2006 – present) working with the ADZU Medical school in Zamboanga.
Some of the projects worked on:

  • Patient Census application for the Zamboanga General Hospital.  We developed three systems; a) Microsoft Access b) Web-Based c) Thin Java Client
  • Literature Repository for Medical Thesis.  The system was web-based, hyperlinked by topic and kept track of user access. 
  • Condensing of PubMed literature for SMS transmission (Prototype) 
  • Emergency Notification via SMS for medical personnel (Prototype) 

Malawi

Several projects (2003-2008) have occurred working with the Malawian Ministry of Health and …
These projects include:

  • Reproductive health and family planning database and reporting system supported by CIDA.
  • Multi-Agent Simulation for helping to plan nursing resources. 
  • Multi-Agent Simulation for looking at Infectious Disease outbreaks.  This system was called IDESS (Infectious Disease Emergency Simulation System). 
  • Health facility reporting system using data collected by JICA.  
  • A system that utilized low-bandwidth satellite pagers and web-based mapping system to report real-time on the outbreak of new diseases or to respond to an emergency such as refugee displacement.  This system was called the Global User Surveillance and Emergency Response System (GuSERS).

Zambia

Several projects (2003-2008) ave occurred working with CHAZ (Churches Health Association of Zambia) and Planned Parenthood Zambia. These projects include:

  • Reproductive health and family planning database and reporting system supported by CIDA and administrated through CHAZ (Churches Health Association of Zambia) and Planned Parenthood Zambia.
  • Health facility reporting system using data collected by JICA.
  • A system that utilized low-bandwidth satellite pagers and web-based mapping system to report real-time on the outbreak of new diseases or to respond to an emergency such as refugee displacement.  This system was called the Global User Surveillance and Emergency Response System (GuSERS).

Kenya

Several projects (2006-2009) occurred working with the University of Manitoba and the University of Nairobi. These projects included:

  • Investigating the reporting abilities of several databases hosted by the UofM/UofN.
  • Investigated looking in content management systems and VMWare appliances that could be deployed to help support research.  

World Health Organization

I did an summer internship (2010) at the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva with the International Classification of Disease department (responsible for the ICD codes) 
Some of projects worked on:

  • Mortality Knowledge Database redesign.
  • Analysis of the complexity of the Mortality Knowledge Database (i.e. rule expansion and conflicting rules).
  • Twenty question approach for conducting Verbal Autopsy.

I later did a consultancy (2017) with WHO to prepare technical documentation for using the Open Data Kit (ODK) for remote data collection regarding Verbal Autopsy (VA).

Samoa
A consultancy with WHO in Apia, Samoa to provide ​advice on Samoa’s deployment of a national Electronic Health Record.  This activity was mainly working with the Samoa Ministry of Health and focused on system requirements.
